Rahul Gandhi Alleges BJP of Vote Chori in 2024 Elections

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again stirred a political storm by accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in what he calls “vote chori,” or vote theft, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At a press conference on August 7, he claimed that large-scale irregularities in the electoral process went unchecked, which, in his view, worked in favour of the ruling party.

Speaking to the media, Gandhi shared data that he said was compiled by his team after examining voter lists and polling records. Using Mahadevapura in Bengaluru as an example, he pointed out several types of alleged discrepancies. These included duplicate entries in voter rolls, multiple registrations tied to the same address, mismatched photographs, sudden spikes in votes recorded late in the day, and questionable use of voter registration forms such as Form-6.

He argued that these issues were not unique to one constituency. According to him, similar patterns appeared in several parts of the country. He urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to release electoral rolls in a machine-readable format and to make polling station CCTV footage available for public scrutiny.

ECI and BJP’s Reaction

The Election Commission responded to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks by firmly denying his claims and stating that the accusations were unfounded. According to the commission, the electoral rolls are already open for public access, and anyone with concerns should follow the established legal channels to lodge a complaint. Officials added that they had invited him to sign a formal declaration confirming his allegations, as required under the Registration of Electors Rules.

The BJP also rejected the charges. Party leaders argued that his statements were aimed at creating unnecessary doubt about the integrity of the electoral system. They said his press briefing appeared to be a calculated political move intended to question the credibility of both the ruling party and the Election Commission.

Why Rahul Gandhi Did Not Sign the Declaration

He declined to sign the affidavit sought by the Election Commission, saying the responsibility for investigating irregularities lies with the poll body, not with him. The opposition leader explained that he had already sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution when entering Parliament and had no intention of taking any further pledge for this issue. In his view, it is the ECI’s role to supply verified voter data and safeguard the integrity of elections. Without full access to official records, he argued, political leaders cannot be expected to prove alleged discrepancies. His team added that their analysis was based entirely on information available in the public domain, and their demand was for greater transparency in the electoral process.

Possible Connection to the Bihar Elections

The timing of his renewed allegations has raised speculation, as Bihar is preparing for assembly elections. Political observers believe the controversy could influence voter sentiment in the state. Supporters of Gandhi view his campaign as a stand for electoral fairness, while critics suggest it may be a strategic move to rally Congress supporters ahead of the polls.

Conclusion

This situation has developed into an uncommon and highly public clash between the Election Commission and a prominent leader from the opposition. The next steps will largely depend on whether the Congress is able to present solid, verifiable proof to back its accusations. Until such evidence is produced, the commission is expected to hold firm to its position. The eventual outcome could influence how much trust people place in the country’s voting system and could also shape the political mood as several state elections approach.
